Solution focused routes through risk

Masterclass Tuesday 5th March 2024 with Naomi Whitehead, UK.

COntent:

In this workshop we will explore areas of people’s lives that are often accompanied by risks to their safety and wellbeing including recreational and dependent drug and alcohol use, sexual risk taking, criminal activity, mental health issues, social isolation and challenges associated with living with ADHD and Autism. In addition there will be space for the unique subjects, questions and enquiries you would like to investigate through a solution-focused lens to generate hope, possibilities and desired change.

Through playful, interactive and experiential exercises we will take a deep dive into what it is like to be a young person faced with the challenges both outlined above and brought by you, and discover powerful and simple ways these can be navigated and overcome.

We will discuss and co-create ideas about skilful solution-focused communication styles that can have a profound and lasting positive impact on both the young people themselves and their carers, parents, siblings, professionals and anyone else who may be significant in their lives.

Afterwards you can expect to:

  • Understand the harm reduction framework which guides safer decision making in relation to drug and alcohol use, sexual risk taking and criminal activity.

  • Have more knowledge about the value of recognising risky behaviour as a moving spectrum

  • Have ideas about how you can invite the people you work with to be more confident and skilled in making decisions that increase their safety and wellbeing

  • Have ways you might inspire the people you work with to look into and progress closer towards education, training, volunteering and employment

  • Know how to use solution-focused tools such as scaling in relation to daily routines, mental health issues, social isolation and challenges associated with ADHD and Autism

  • Have explored other mechanisms the people you work with may be able to experience some of the “highs” they have usually achieved through risky behaviours

  • Have participated in fun and uplifting exercises and gained new perspectives about how you can tune into people’s existing expertise and skills for change (from recovery to discovery).
